FERPA in Academic Year 2018-19: The Do’s and Don’ts of Managing Student Records with Special Emphasis on E-mail, Texts, and Social Media

Pre Recorded

  • 90 minutes

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is the single most important American law regulating student records. It also may very well be the single most poorly understood federal statute impacting American education. FERPA defines what are student records and dictates when they can be released, by whom and to whom. FERPA also determines when and how students themselves, as well as their parents, may access their records and how, if at all, they can amend them.

In this webinar expert speaker James Ottavio Castagnera, will give information on all these crucial topics, as well as a look at how FERPA relates to privacy rights under the federal Constitution and the American common law.

Session Highlights:

  • How broad is FERPA’s definition of ‘student records and does it include email, texts and social media

  • When can a student demand to revise her records

  • When and to whom can the institution release records

  • How much can campus colleagues share information about dangerous or suicidal students

  • What are the penalties for FERPA violations and can I and my institution be used

  • How does FERPA relate to constitutional and common-law privacy rights
